Elements of Defensive Signaling – 4 Week Series

Details:
Do you need to develop communication with partner on defense? Are you not maximizing the tricks you take when playing against the opponents – Are you not setting enough contracts? We will cover a variety of timely topics in this course. In this 4 week course of 8 lessons we will go over the elements of sound defense including: standard carding, upside down carding, count signals, relative carding , suit preference signals, trump echoes, smith echos, and reverse smith echo. We will cover when to use count and when to indicate attitude as well as briefly discuss odd/even discards and Lavinthal discards.

In this course we will explore the use of fundamental bidding concepts, play concepts and defense as it pertains to a 16 hand set of boards. Popular conventions such as Jacoby 2NT, Ogust, slam conventions RKC, 1430, Blackwood and play concepts using methods to gain more tricks – trumping, setting up suits, maintaining control of a hand with a weak trump suit, to the core of defense – attitude, count and suit preference will be explored as it relates to hands. Evaluating your points to make further bidding decisions, choosing from among alternatives in play and maximizing defensive communication and signals will be the focus of the hands. An analysis of each hand will be provided as your handout for each class. The next class will have further exploration of any convention, play concept or defense concept that is discussed in the previous lesson. Location: The development is known as Shouse Village. The address of the Community Center building, where the class will be held, is 1432 Towlston Road. It is at the intersection of Towlston Road and Shouse Drive.

1) Head West on Leesburg Pike (Route 7) out of Tyson's Corner. The third traffic light, 1.4 miles after crossing the Dulles Access Road/Toll Road, is Towlston Road (the signs on Route 7 make the Towlston Road intersection easy to spot.) Turn left (South) from Route 7, and the Community Center is at the first intersection (Shouse Drive) (0.2 miles).
2) From the I-495 Beltway, take the Dulles Toll Road westbound. The second exit past the Toll Plaza is the turn-off to Wolf Trap (the first exit was Route 7 westbound). Take that exit onto Trap Road, go past Wolf Trap, and 0.5 miles later, the Community Center is at the second opportunity to turn left (Shouse Drive).
There is ample free parking adjacent to the Community Center building.

Details:
This series will review signals for suit contracts – attitude, count, and suit preference and compare to the use of these same signals – attitude, count, and suit preference in no trump concepts. Echo systems will be discussed as well as lavinthal, odd-even signals the meaning of ace and king leads in no trump will be explored.

The basics of sound standard American bidding will be discussed featuring the opening bid, responder bid and rebids by both responder and opener. Basic play and defense will be reviewed and then we will move on to elements of competitive bidding – the overcall, double, preemptive bidding, and the negative double that will assist in arriving at the correct final destination for a contract. Scoring will be discussed as it relates to final destination for your contracts. Audrey Grant's Improving Your Judgment 1 : Opening the Bidding and Pat Harrington's Beginner Bridge Series will be used as a basis for the early portion of the course. We then will move into use of Audrey Grant's Competitive Bidding Book for the second part of the course.

Evaluating your hand to determine where your final destination should be is critical to mastering the game. We will discuss hand evaluation based on bidding of both sides as it pertains to pre-dealt hands. 12 to 16 hands will be used as illustrations with special emphasis on conventional bidding – jacoby transfers, jacoby 2NT , slam bidding, slam conventions – RKC and 1430 , minorwood, cue bidding. Each hand will also be discussed as to how to defend each hand – listening to the bidding to uncover the best opening lead and the use of attitude , count, and suit preference to maximize defensive tricks to hold declarer to a minimum number of tricks whether that is to make the contract or not. We will use as a reference book David Bird's Defensive Signaling.

This course will continue the elements of sound competitive bidding using the cue bid, and negative double to increase the arsenal of weapons that responder and advancer can have at their fingertips to precisely get to the final destination for both sides. We will also cover doubles in depth. Not only is the takeout double used for the other suits but there are advanced meanings for doubles that involve strong forcing hands. We will discuss and explore these uses as it pertains to competitive bidding. The use of Audrey Grant's Improving Your Judgment 2 : Doubles will be used for this class.

We will review all the concepts of beginning bidding featuring the opening bid, responder bid , and rebids by opener and responder. We will continue to explore overcalling, doubles, and stayman as it is used in basic bidding. Basic play and defense concepts will be explored. We will use Audrey Grant's Improving Your Judgement 1: Opening the Bidding as the basis for review for the material that we started to learn last semester.
